Message The TT oil pump internal bypass valve opens at approximately 112 psi (NA pump bypass valve opens at approx 75 psi).

The TT oil filter tree bypass valve to the cooler opens at approx 44 psi.

The restrictor in the OE cooler line is used to meter the amount of oil that goes to the cooler and ensure that the majority of oil flow is reserved for the engine.

We also have to consider the filter bypass valves that are located in the TT oil filter tree, or if an NA they are in the block where the filter tree mounts to it. Unfortunately I do not have any data on the pressure that these valves open at.

Besides normal engine oil requirements, it is the combination of cooler bypass/restrictor and filter bypass valves that controls the base oil pressure measured at the engine bearings.


If you block the cooler bypass valve, you will see a slight increase in oil pressure measured at the bearings due to the removal what amounts to an internal oil leak in the pressurized system.

If you retain the bypass valve/restrictor and loop the lines, oil pressure will be unchanged.

In my opinion, an increase in oil pressure is not a bad thing here. Also, for a full flow system, I highly recommend using a thermostat to control the oil flow to the cooler because the faster the oil reaches operating temperature, the faster the engine becomes efficient.
